Am I A Candidate for Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can reduce the look of surface skin blemishes, including fine lines, uneven texture, dull skin tone, clogged pores, scars, and sun damage. It is safe for people of every skin type and tone that want clearer, healthier skin. This treatment is typically used on the face; however, it may also benefit the skin on your neck, chest, and hands. This procedure should not be used on skin with an open wound or a chronic condition, such as rosacea or acne.
How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Microdermabrasion treatments are done at our office after a thorough consultation to decide what procedures will lead to your best results. During the treatment, you will be asked to sit back in a treatment chair as your skin is prepared. The microdermabrasion tool will run along your skin as it polishes and sucks up the crystals and dead skin. Although the treatment feels unusual, it not considered uncomfortable so you wouldn't need a numbing cream or local anesthesia. The microdermabrasion treatment will be applied evenly over the needed areas but with extra caution around the eyes. As soon as the treatment is complete, the skin will be cleaned to remove any residue before a moisturizer with UV protection, chosen for your skin type, is applied.
What to Expect After Microdermabrasion
Following a microdermabrasion treatment, you may get back to your normal activities, but you need to apply some form of sun protection since your newly soft skin will be sensitive. Your face will feel softer, and your tone will be brighter. To extend the results of your treatment, Dr. Bodian recommends scheduling a microdermabrasion treatment once every 4 – 6 weeks. Many Bodian Dermatology patients notice that after microdermabrasion treatments, their skin care products (especially moisturizers) absorb more easily into their skin for more effective results.
Microdermabrasion FAQ
Should I get microdermabrasion or a chemical peel?
Depending on your concerns and goals, a skin care technician will help you decide if microdermabrasion or a chemical peel is the best treatment for you. In a nutshell, microdermabrasion is good to clear away the outer layer of dead and damaged skin cells to make your complexion look smoother and healthier. You can get these same results from a light chemical peel. A stronger chemical peel is better if your skin problems are in the deeper layers. Recovery time may also influence which treatment you want because microdermabrasion causes minimal downtime.
How often should I get microdermabrasion treatments?
To start, you should get 5 – 12 microdermabrasion sessions every 2 – 4 weeks to rejuvenate your complexion. After that, you may move to appointments every 4 – 8 weeks to maintain your skin's health. During your consultation, your technician can create a treatment plan with recommendations for your needs that plan out when you need to schedule appointments for microdermabrasion.
How should I care for my skin after a microdermabrasion treatment?
Following your microdermabrasion procedure, you should avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day to allow your skin time to rest. You should avoid direct exposure to UV rays ( tanning beds and natural sunlight ) and shield your skin with sunscreen. To reduce swelling and redness following the microdermabrasion, we may suggest a soothing serum or cold compresses.
Can I combine microdermabrasion with other treatments?
Yes, you can. Since microdermabrasion is a surface skin treatment, you may consider combining it with other procedures. You may combine microdermabrasion with a facial or an injectable wrinkle treatment, like BOTOX®. Please be open about all your complexion needs during your consultation so your technician is able to build a treatment plan that reaches all your goals.
